Extremism

Understanding Ideological, Religious, and Political Radicalization

Definition

Extremism refers to beliefs, ideologies, or behaviors that fall far outside accepted social norms and, in some cases, advocate the use of violence or unlawful means to achieve political, ideological, or religious objectives.

The Threat of Violent Extremism

While not all extremism is violent, violent extremism poses a significant threat to public safety, national security, and social cohesion, with incidents of serious violence increasing in recent years.

Categories of Violent Extremism

It is generally categorized into three main types:

  • Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism (IMVE)
  • Religiously Motivated Violent Extremism (RMVE)
  • Politically Motivated Violent Extremism (PMVE)

IMVE further includes forms such as:

  • Xenophobic Violence
